While there is a broad consensus around the imperative of innovation in education from both from policy makers, teachers and other educational professionals, the question to be contested is how to identify the key barriers for innovations. Better Together? Why Governments are Partnering with Non-profits

Governments are partnering with local non-profit education organizations in a range of ways to help them expand access to quality education. In Pakistan, The Citizens Foundation has built over 1,000 independent schools serving low-income children and now manages over 350 government schools under seven diverse PPP agreements. This panel will explore what it will take to fully finance comprehensive early childhood development and how the public and private sectors can work together to give every child the best start in life. Whether it’s employment, resilience, creative thinking or working with others, these skills are hardwired in the early years. Around the world, rich and poor countries are failing to deliver on the promises made to the world's youngest children, risking their development and future life chances. By the time a child reaches the age of five, 90% of their brain has already developed. Yet millions of children from poor and marginalised households are unable to access early childhood development services, including education. Countries on average only invest 2% of their education budgets on pre-primary and aid to pre-primary education is less than 1% of global education aid, despite needing to reach 10% to put countries on track for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Tearing up the Textbook: How India is Disrupting its Education System in Order to Save it

How difficult will it be for the world’s second-largest education system to change course? India has long recognized the fundamental importance of education to securing its future. Fifty years ago, the country’s National Education Commission wrote: “The destiny of India is now being shaped in her classrooms...” But for years, successive governments have faced systemic and seemingly unsolvable issues on education – among them poorly performing teacher-training institutions, a lack of adequate physical and digital infrastructure and the fact that Indian children spend significantly less time in school on average than their peers in other major emerging economies such as China and Brazil.

India’s national government has recently launched a bold new education policy, which places significant emphasis on digital technology and pedagogical innovation. Launch of the RewirEd Declaration on Connectivity for Education, which has been developed by UNESCO in partnership with Dubai Cares to ensure that connected technology better supports the right to education, drawing on lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reflects the inputs of a 22-person expert advisory group and a global consultation process, involving governments, civil society, youth, teachers, researchers, private sectors organizations, and other stakeholder groups. The RewirEd Declaration puts forward principles and commitments to establish normative directions and priorities for the digital transformation of education. It also provides important orientation for educational financing. Combining “old” and “new” evidence to create and scale-up innovative post-COVID education solutions

Covid-19 shuttered schools for over 1.6 billion children at the height of the pandemic. Covid-caused school closures threaten to exacerbate a pre-existing “learning crisis” where many students were in school but learning very little even pre-pandemic. Analysis of past long-term school closures shows that large, and potentially permanent learning losses can result. Some pre-existing learning inequities have also increased due to lack of access to technology for distance learning by some groups, and other causes. As schools are reopening, and often working in an environment of tight budgets, making smart education policy decisions that are based on evidence and cost-effectiveness is more important than ever for governments. Equally, governments are trying to explore innovative solutions that will allow students not just to catch up but also thrive and reach their full potential. The forthcoming paper by the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel (GEEAP advises how education policy makers and funders of education programs can take advantage of what we know about cost-effective education solutions combined with additional evidence gathered during COVID to develop recommendations with new and innovative evidence-based solutions. Reimagining Education in Emergencies: Lessons from research in three crisis-affected countries

The main goal of this event is to engage audience in a discussion on the effective ways to support children’s learning and development in conflict- and crisis-affected contexts. Governments are increasingly recognising the vital need for young people with the skills to succeed in a rapidly changing world of work. Yet, too often good policies at the national level don’t lead to change at the local level for young people. The missing link is low-cost, high-impact programmes which can translate policy ambitions into everyday practice in schools. We have done it, know what works, and have the evidence! The session introduces our School Enterprise Challenge programme describing how: - A program focused on Entrepreneurship and Soft Skills can produce impressive academic results - increasing by four times the number of students achieving the highest grades in STEM - A one-year experiential program can double young people’s income on leaving school, - An approach works from the toughest Ugandan refugee camps to elite Indian private schools and has been incorporated into education systems It is an injustice that not every young person leaves education equipped with skills for success in work and life. A growing number of governments recognise the School Enterprise Challenge programme as an effective and cost-effective way to bridge the policy-practice divide - giving teachers a practical approach for preparing tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, leaders and changemakers to thrive, whatever future they face.

Ethafa: Edtech to bridge the gender gap in tech education for STEAM

Ethafa is the Arabic word for STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. The Ethafa project was started to rethink how to bridge the gap in tech education and how to engage more Arabic girls in STEAM and technology disciplines. It is a project which originates from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). Ethafa does so through STEAMMIAN kits, friendly robots. Each one features different circuits and sensors. Students assemble these fictional characters, then learn by playing and solving simple challenges in small teams. To adress this topic, the Swiss Pavilion will give insights into the role of TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) in keeping up with fast changing working environments. More specifically, the mission is to elaborate on how vocational education can provide youth with flexible learning skills and a mindset adapted to lifelong learning.
