High-Level Panel: The Future of Learning for All: EdTech and Learning Equity

In many places, technology has created endless boundaries of where learning can occur, with whom, how and why. It is something that needs to be incorporated in the future of education to ensure students are equipped with the skills to cope in a world dependent on technology. The influence of AI and Machine Learning in EdTech is predicted to grow exponentially in the coming years, as is the use of Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). However, these new technologies are not accessible for over half of the world’s learners. This high-level panel will discuss current trends in the adoption of education technologies in various contexts, and how education in the future needs to demonstrate how technology can be used to students’ advantage everywhere, with equity of access at its core.

Better Together? Why Governments are Partnering with Non-profits

Governments are partnering with local non-profit education organizations in a range of ways to help them expand access to quality education. In Pakistan, The Citizens Foundation has built over 1,000 independent schools serving low-income children and now manages over 350 government schools under seven diverse PPP agreements. In Madhya Pradesh and Odisha in India, a coalition of non-state actors, facilitated and managed by Central Square Foundation, are working alongside state governments to strengthen the delivery of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in state schools. PEAS is leveraging its experience operating schools to provide a wider range of system strengthening support to the Ugandan government. In this session, leaders from non-profit organisations from South Asia and Africa will share how they are working together with governments to sustainably transform systems at scale. They will explore the perceived benefits and challenges of these partnerships, and discuss how we might expand our understanding of PPPs beyond traditional subsidy or contract management models to broader “Partnerships for Public Purpose (PPP)

High-Level Panel: Investing in Early Childhood: Financing First Things First

This panel will explore what it will take to fully finance comprehensive early childhood development and how the public and private sectors can work together to give every child the best start in life. Whether it’s employment, resilience, creative thinking or working with others, these skills are hardwired in the early years. Around the world, rich and poor countries are failing to deliver on the promises made to the world's youngest children, risking their development and future life chances. By the time a child reaches the age of five, 90% of their brain has already developed. Yet millions of children from poor and marginalised households are unable to access early childhood development services, including education. Countries on average only invest 2% of their education budgets on pre-primary and aid to pre-primary education is less than 1% of global education aid, despite needing to reach 10% to put countries on track for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Tearing up the Textbook: How India is Disrupting its Education System in Order to Save it

How difficult will it be for the world’s second-largest education system to change course? India has long recognized the fundamental importance of education to securing its future. Fifty years ago, the country’s National Education Commission wrote: “The destiny of India is now being shaped in her classrooms...” But for years, successive governments have faced systemic and seemingly unsolvable issues on education – among them poorly performing teacher-training institutions, a lack of adequate physical and digital infrastructure and the fact that Indian children spend significantly less time in school on average than their peers in other major emerging economies such as China and Brazil.

India’s national government has recently launched a bold new education policy, which places significant emphasis on digital technology and pedagogical innovation. To deliver, education authorities across the country are looking for innovative and disruptive ideas from the private and philanthropic sectors, as well as from a new generation of tech-literate teachers and public officials. In this session, hear from a range of leaders across different sectors who believe that disrupting India’s education system could deliver major gains in learning.

Dignified Storytelling: Teaching Information Literacy in the Age of Digital Media

Digital media is a powerful influencer of social change as a tool for communications and a channel for the wide dissemination of information and knowledge. The rise of digital media has added new complexity to the relationship between schools and media. This event will explore the important role of education in fostering the skills needed to critically examine the digital stories and information that we consume daily. It will also explore the question of how media sources, social media corporations, and educational institutions can collaborate more effectively to ensure that information literacy is central to education – towards the creation of more just, open societies built on accurate information. We all have important roles to play in fostering the competencies needed to decode digital media. Combining “old” and “new” evidence to create and scale-up innovative post-COVID education solutions

Covid-19 shuttered schools for over 1.6 billion children at the height of the pandemic. Covid-caused school closures threaten to exacerbate a pre-existing “learning crisis” where many students were in school but learning very little even pre-pandemic. Analysis of past long-term school closures shows that large, and potentially permanent learning losses can result. Some pre-existing learning inequities have also increased due to lack of access to technology for distance learning by some groups, and other causes. As schools are reopening, and often working in an environment of tight budgets, making smart education policy decisions that are based on evidence and cost-effectiveness is more important than ever for governments. Equally, governments are trying to explore innovative solutions that will allow students not just to catch up but also thrive and reach their full potential. The forthcoming paper by the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel (GEEAP https://rb.gy/diq12c) advises how education policy makers and funders of education programs can take advantage of what we know about cost-effective education solutions combined with additional evidence gathered during COVID to develop recommendations with new and innovative evidence-based solutions. The video will provide a short introduction to the forthcoming paper.

Reimagining Education in Emergencies: Lessons from research in three crisis-affected countries

The main goal of this event is to engage audience in a discussion on the effective ways to support children’s learning and development in conflict- and crisis-affected contexts. Based on actionable evidence generated from the three humanitarian educational programming contexts (with Syrian refugee children in Lebanon, Boko Haram-affected children in Niger, and children living through multiple and protracted crises in Sierra Leone)—as a part of a larger 3EA initiative and funded by Dubai Cares E-Cubed Research Envelope, three short and engaging TED-talk-style presentations will be given by the researchers at Global TIES for Children. All presentations will be pre-recoded. The proposed topics include: a. A journey into a day of a refugee child: Risks, struggles, and hope b. Path to recovery and resilience: How to support refugee children’s needs, challenges, and pathways for learning and thriving c. Eyes on the process—beyond access: Role of teachers and implementation of education programming and lessons for the future.

Academic Education is Not Enough: Why Youth are Demanding Skills for Success

Governments are increasingly recognising the vital need for young people with the skills to succeed in a rapidly changing world of work. Yet, too often good policies at the national level don’t lead to change at the local level for young people. The missing link is low-cost, high-impact programmes which can translate policy ambitions into everyday practice in schools. We have done it, know what works, and have the evidence! The session introduces our School Enterprise Challenge programme describing how: - A program focused on Entrepreneurship and Soft Skills can produce impressive academic results - increasing by four times the number of students achieving the highest grades in STEM - A one-year experiential program can double young people’s income on leaving school, - An approach works from the toughest Ugandan refugee camps to elite Indian private schools and has been incorporated into education systems It is an injustice that not every young person leaves education equipped with skills for success in work and life. A growing number of governments recognise the School Enterprise Challenge programme as an effective and cost-effective way to bridge the policy-practice divide - giving teachers a practical approach for preparing tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, leaders and changemakers to thrive, whatever future they face.

Have They Been Included?

In this session, we will be highlighting the critical importance of providing accessible, inclusive education to all and what can be done to improve access. During the session, we will hear from our CEO, Katie Fowler and disability inclusion experts in the field on why inclusivity should be at the forefront of conversations as we fight for education for all. We will emphasise the importance of education equity, rather than equality, recognising that a lot more resources need to be invested in the most vulnerable children in order to attain the global goal of providing education access to all children. Girls, street connected children, children in emergency settings, children with disabilities are among the most vulnerable and are still a long way behind in terms of education access and quality. How are their needs considered when it comes through classroom teaching and learning? Furthermore, the protracted COVID 19 crisis has made education inequality and the digital divide more apparent. In the session, we will draw on our own experiences from past and current projects in address these issues.

What do we know (so far) about remote delivery of ECD programs in humanitarian settings?

Remote modalities are an important but novel tool for early childhood development service providers in settings affected by conflict or crisis. As a sector, we are building the evidence base for reach, scale, impact, and equity as we design and implement these programs. In this webinar, researchers and practitioners from BRAC, Sesame Workshop, the IRC, and the University of Virginia provided perspectives on the state of the evidence to date. The webinar closed with a panel discussion on what steps implementers and researchers in the sector could take in order to improve the quality, reach, and equity of early childhood services for children and families on the move.

Event page (incl registration): https://swisspavilion.org/ethafa-bridge-the-gender-gap-in-tech-education/

Ethafa is the Arabic word for STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. The Ethafa project was started to rethink how to bridge the gap in tech education and how to engage more Arabic girls in STEAM and technology disciplines. It is a project which originates from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). Ethafa does so through STEAMMIAN kits, friendly robots. Each one features different circuits and sensors. Students assemble these fictional characters, then learn by playing and solving simple challenges in small teams. Join us for a workshop to discover this unique approach.
